A striking late 19th-century Gothic Revival freestanding gong, mounted in an elaborately carved walnut frame of architectural character. The substantial circular bronze gong, hand-hammered throughout and retaining a deep, variegated patina, is suspended by chains from a horizontal beam secured with exposed metal strapping. The walnut frame is finely detailed with turned uprights, carved finials, pointed geometric motifs, and a stretcher base incorporating baluster spindles, all resting on shaped feet. Accompanied by a padded striker, suspended to one side.
Both sculptural and functional, this commanding Gothic Revival object would have served as a ceremonial, institutional, or domestic signalling instrument. Its scale, craftsmanship, and pronounced verticality give it a strong architectural presence, making it an exceptional statement piece.
