A half hull model is a three-dimensional representation of one side of a ships hull, traditionally used by naval architects and shipbuilders to visualise hull design and calculate displacement before full-scale construction.

These models were typically constructed from stacked lifts of timber such as mahogany, pine, or white pine, often featuring painted finishes, inlaid waterline markers, and mounted on backboards within glazed display cases.

Authentication involves examining the wood species, construction methods such as hand-cut lifts, period-appropriate pigments, hand-drawn detailing, and signs of natural ageing and oxidisation on the timber and glass case.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points when mounted on panelled walls or library shelving, complementing studies, hallways, or living rooms with a distinct maritime or gentlemans study aesthetic.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent wood shrinkage, while dusting the exterior glass case with a soft, dry cloth.
