Description

A large and impressive set of antique Georgian style mahogany library steps. They were made in England, and date from around the 1930’s.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, it stands on brass casters and has a brass finial at the top.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Georgian library steps were developed in the 18th century to provide access to high bookshelves in private libraries and studies as domestic book collections expanded.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring traditional joinery, turned spindles, and sometimes brass castors for mobility.

Authentic period steps exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, genuine timber shrinkage, period-appropriate hardware, and signs of hand-finishing rather than modern machine production.

They can be integrated into a home office, study, or living room either functionally next to tall shelving units or displayed as a decorative accent piece with books or plants.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a traditional beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and prevent drying.
