Description

This is a finely turned English 18th century lignum vitae pounce pot. The lid unscrews for refilling the pounce. The lid is shaped like a saucer so that any unused pounce could be poured back onto the lid. A very minor repaired chip to the rim.

These English pounce pots where the lid unscrews are the more difficult ones to find.

FAQs

Preservation requires keeping the wooden object away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.

Such historic desk objects work well as sculptural desk ornaments, shelf styling elements, or miniature display pieces within a traditional study or modern minimalist workspace.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, and construction methods characteristic of the 18th and early 19th centuries, alongside multi-perforated lids designed for shaking powder.

Pounce pots were traditionally crafted from a variety of materials including turned woods like mahogany, lignum vitae, and fruitwood, as well as metals such as silver, brass, pewter, and ceramics.

A pounce pot is a small container used in the past to sprinkle fine powder, such as resin or sand, over freshly written ink to absorb excess moisture and prevent smudging before blotting paper became widely available.
