Description

A very fine early 19th century sofa table, this table is made from two very expensive timbers, with coromandal cross banding and a huge swathe of amboyna on top, there can be few better ways to confer absolute poshness to any room setting. This table is free standing with false drawers to the reverse which means that it is a very useful piece being able to be used behind sofa, as a writing table or as a side table against a wall. The proportions are perfect the colour is wonderful and the timber is to die for. A truly fantastic table which must have been made for a very grand house indeed.

FAQs

Sofa tables originated during the late eighteenth century and remained popular throughout the nineteenth century, designed specifically to stand behind a sofa or in the centre of a room for writing and reading.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often veneered with highly figured timbers like burr walnut, and featured dovetailed drawers and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, natural timber shrinkage, hand-turned pedestals, and genuine patination on the wood and brass elements rather than modern artificial distressing.

Place the table behind a low sofa or against an entryway wall, styling the surface with a balanced arrangement of modern ceramics, art books, and a low-profile lamp to bridge historical and contemporary aesthetics.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply natural beeswax periodically while avoiding synthetic silicone polishes.
