Antique Georgian Boxed Desk Set W/ 10 Intaglio Coloured-glass Seals Early 1800'S

18th century
Description

Antique Georgian Boxed Desk Set with 10 Intaglio Coloured-Glass Seals & Handle – Early 1800s

A rare Georgian boxed desk seal set, dating from the early 19th century (circa 1800–1820).

The set includes ten hand-engraved intaglio seals in richly coloured glass, housed in their original fitted velvet- and silk-lined wooden case, together with a turned handle made of coloured glass. The handle was designed for use with the interchangeable seal matrices.

An early nineteenth-century Georgian boxed desk set contains a faceted amber glass handle with a silver collar mount and ten interchangeable intaglio glass seals housed inside a fitted purple velvet case. The set includes hand-engraved coloured glass seals with classical motifs and Latin inscriptions, alongside a turned citrine-tone glass handle designed to receive the seal matrices for creating wax impressions on correspondence. The exterior of the hinged paperboard case is lined with pale cream silk and velvet, displaying minor edge wear and surface rubbing consistent with age. Measuring approximately 20 cm in length, this traditional writing accessory is suited for display on a home office desk, library table, or writing bureau. It functions as a decorative historic ornament or can be used for sealing letters and documents with traditional wax seals.

A Georgian desk seal set is a personal writing accessory from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, consisting of a handle and interchangeable intaglio seals stored in a fitted case.

These sets were crafted using faceted glass, carved hardstones, brass, or sterling silver for the handle and seals, typically housed in velvet-lined leather or paperboard cases.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate engraved or molded reverse lettering, silver collar fittings, slight wear on contact surfaces, and early nineteenth-century typography.

Open fitted seal cases work well when styled open on an office desk, displayed inside a glass cloche, or arranged on a library shelf alongside antique books.

Store the set in a dry location away from direct sunlight, wipe the glass components with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid applying liquids or cleaners to the delicate velvet lining.
