Austrian Majolica Pottery Depicting Birds and Sunflowers, C1890

Description

This rich three dimensionally decorated wall charger is a majolica pottery highly decorative example by the well regarded Austrian Gebruder Schutz factory. It is circular with a deep relief design of a naturalistic view of a row of three baby birds perched on a slender stem with sunflowers and clematis rising above in a semi-circular design in mixed tones of light brown over a vivid blue ground with an incised floral and foliate pattern. A most eye catching and pleasing piece of wall art. It is in very good condition with no damage or restoration and fully marked on the reverse.

After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Majolica pottery achieved immense popularity during the late nineteenth century after being introduced at the Great Exhibition of 1851. European potteries, including those in Austria, produced colourful earthenware adorned with botanical and zoological reliefs, reflecting the Victorian fascination with nature and decorative arts.

Majolica was crafted using a low-fired earthenware clay body pressed into plaster moulds to create high-relief surface details. The ceramics were then decorated using metallic oxide glazes, such as copper for greens and teals or iron for brown tones, finished with a clear protective glaze.
