Faience is tin-glazed earthenware that originated in the ancient Near East and gained widespread popularity throughout Europe, particularly in Italy and France, during the Renaissance and subsequent centuries for its vibrant glaze techniques.

These pieces are typically constructed from local clay, shaped by hand or in moulds, fired, and then coated with a tin-oxide opaque white glaze before being hand-painted with metal oxide pigments and fired again.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the glaze characteristics, such as crazing, micro-chips revealing the buff earthenware body, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and historical wear patterns on the base.

Such pieces can be displayed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or atop a stack of books on a side table to add a touch of historical texture and artisanal craftsmanship to contemporary spaces.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using water or chemical cleaning agents on porous historic glazes.
