FAQs

A Hepplewhite reading table is a piece of 18th-century furniture designed to hold books or documents at an adjustable angle for reading, typically featuring a pedestal base and a slanted top associated with designer George Hepplewhite.

These items were predominantly constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, and occasionally oak, often incorporating brass mechanisms for adjustable reading ledges.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, traditional hand-rubbed wax finishes, and correct historical hardware construction.

Such pieces function effectively as display stands for open art books or historical manuscripts in studies, libraries, or living spaces to add traditional architectural character.

Preserve the finish by keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
