Description

A rare large-format pair of Royal Worcester Egyptian musicians modelled by James Hadley and dated 1893. These impressive figures stand at approximately 33–34 cm high and are notably scarcer than the smaller versions. One plays a lute-like stringed instrument, the companion raises a tambourine in a gentle rhythmic gesture.

Each bears the incised Hadley signature to the upper base, with Worcester printed marks, the Registered Design number and the shared model number 1084 beneath. The warm ivory palette, serene expressions and soft modelling represent Worcester’s finest late nineteenth-century sculptural production.

Historical Background

James Hadley was the leading modeller of Worcester’s “golden age” and was described by the factory as “the finest modeller ever employed”. His Orientalist compositions, especially in this larger scale, were produced in limited numbers and are highly sought after today. Their scale, refinement and balanced modelling give the pair the presence of small sculptural works.
