Majolica refers to tin-glazed earthenware developed during the Renaissance in Italy, inspired by Moorish pottery imported via the island of Majorca. The technique allows vibrant mineral colours to be painted directly onto an opaque white glaze prior to firing.

Majolica is crafted from fired earthenware clay coated with a liquid glaze containing tin oxide. High-relief decorative elements, such as fruit swags and scrolled handles, are pressed into moulds or hand-sculpted before being attached to the body prior to glazing.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-painted glazes, subtle variations in thickness, and maker marks or country stamps on the underside. Craquelure in the glaze and small kiln stilt marks on the base are also common features of authentic production.

A majolica bowl functions effectively as a focal display on a dining table, sideboard, or kitchen island. It can be left empty to showcase the interior glaze or filled with fresh fruit, pinecones, or dried botanical arrangements.

Majolica should be dusted with a soft dry cloth or wiped gently using warm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent. Avoid immersion in water, dishwashers, or harsh chemical cleaners, as porous earthenware can absorb moisture through unglazed areas or crazing.
