FAQs

Grodnertal dolls, originating from the Val Gardena region in the Alps, are traditional wooden peg dolls typically produced from the late 18th century through the 19th century, characterised by carved wooden bodies and gesso-coated faces.

These dolls were handcrafted from lightweight local woods, featuring jointed peg limbs connected with wooden pins or thread, and hand-painted facial features applied over a smooth gesso ground.

Authentication relies on examining the tool marks, the composition of the gesso face coating, the ageing of the wooden pegs, and the style of hand-stitching on the period-appropriate textiles.

Displaying antique dolls within enclosed glass cabinets or shadow boxes protects fragile textiles and wood from dust and direct sunlight while integrating historical character into a contemporary room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, and handling textiles minimally with clean cotton gloves.
