This early 20th century refectory dining table is executed in the Georgian style using solid oak with a golden brown finish. The construction incorporates a rectangular plank top with cleated ends, supported by robust turned legs over a low stretcher base. Visible details include an old timber shake to the legs, weathered footrest supports, and general usage wear across the polished timber. The item measures 76 cm high, 178 cm wide, and 99 cm deep, seating six to eight people comfortably. Positioned in a dining room or a spacious kitchen, this table serves as a functional centrepiece for family meals and gatherings. The natural oil polish provides heat resistance and durability for daily use while maintaining the rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Its straightforward proportions allow placement with a variety of seating arrangements, offering a practical surface for everyday dining.

FAQs

Originating in medieval monasteries, a refectory table is a sturdy dining table characterised by a heavy wooden plank top, turned legs, and low stretcher rails designed for communal dining.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, peg fasteners, and heavy timber stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed top surfaces, wooden peg construction, naturally aged patina, and visible wear patterns along the foot stretchers.

Pairing an oak refectory table with contemporary dining chairs or modern sculptural lighting balances historic rustic timber texture with clean contemporary lines.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber, maintaining distance from direct heat sources to prevent warping.
