This mid-19th-century William IV side table takes the form of a mahogany and mahogany veneer turn-over table finished in a warm brown colour. The rectangular fold-over top sits above a frieze adorned with carved corner scroll accents at each corner. A central tapered pedestal column rises from a quadform platform base supported by carved scroll feet fitted with original castors. The timber shows visible figuring across the top surface, whilst the mouldings define the edge of the opening mechanism. Practical dimensions of 75.5 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 45 cm deep allow this piece to seat four persons comfortably when the top is open. Such proportions suit placement against a narrow wall space in a hallway, living room, or dining area as a console or occasional card table.

Popular during the Regency and William IV periods, turn-over tables were designed as versatile, space-saving furniture. They functioned as decorative console or side tables when folded against a wall and could be swivelled open to double their surface area for playing cards or serving tea.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, prized for their rich grain patterns such as flame mahogany. Secondary timbers like pine or oak were commonly used for internal framing and drawer or compartment lining.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional wooden swivelling hinges, and heavy, solid timber pedestal supports. Looking beneath the top often reveals natural timber oxidisation and evidence of historical hand-saw marks.

Positioned in a hallway or entry space, it acts as an elegant narrow console table. In a living room or reception space, it can be styled with table lamps and ceramic objects, or opened out when additional tabletop surface is required.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme fluctuations in humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting.
