This antique oak refectory serving side table belongs to the 19th century and follows a Jacobean style. The piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish and incorporates parts from early and later periods, having been adapted from earlier elements. The design comprises a plank top over a guilloche carved frieze, supported by turned legs joined by a low box stretcher and block feet. The surface exhibits visible grain variations and aged patination. Measuring 78 cm high, 183 cm wide and 66 cm deep, the table suits a dining room or hallway for serving or display purposes within an English country house interior.

A refectory serving table is a long, narrow table originating from monastic dining halls, later adapted into domestic homes for serving food along walls or behind dining seating.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid native timbers such as English oak, constructed using hand-cut mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden dowel pegs.

Authentic pieces display irregular tool marks from hand planes, hand-carved decorative motifs, uneven wooden peg joinery, and natural wood shrinkage across the grain over time.

Position the table as a hallway console or behind a sofa, contrasting the dark oak patina with contemporary lamps, minimalist ceramics, or large-scale modern artwork.

Clean surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting.
