French faience is tinned-glazed earthenware that gained significant popularity during the 16th to 19th centuries, known for its intricate hand-painted designs and vibrant polychrome colours.

These pieces are crafted from local clays, fired, and coated with an opaque white tin glaze before being hand-painted with metallic oxides and fired a second time to seal the colours.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor glaze imperfections, hand-brushed strokes, stylistic variations consistent with regional workshops, and appropriate signs of age such as crazing on the underside.

Display the item on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or glass-fronted cabinet where its detailed craftsmanship can be appreciated up close as a focal point of historical interest.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid submerging the piece in water or using harsh chemical cleaners to protect the fragile glaze and historic pigments.
