Antique Oriental Hardwood Nest of Coffee Tables

Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century Nest of Four Oriental Hardwood Coffee Tables, Having Well Figured Panelled Tops, Retaining Good Rich Colour Throughout, Over Attractive Carved And Pierced Friezes, Raised On Elegant Turned Upright Supports.

Many items were produced in China for the western market from early in the 19th century and beyond. These items are commonly referred to now as having been made for the Chinese Export market and the most prolifically found of these items tend to be coffee tables, opium tables, nests of tables and to a slightly lesser extent altar type side tables.

This nest of tables are a good quality example, relatively early in date which is the reason for the good quality of timber and construction and they retain a good rich colour.

They are of course extremely useful and functional allowing for a whole variety of different uses whether that be individually or as a group. The oriental hardwood which they are constructed from is also a particularly durable timber, meaning one does not need to worry too much about minor spillages or similar during day to day use.

As with all items we offer for sale these have been inspected by our highly skilled, specialist, traditional antique furniture restorers before being made available for sale, to ensure that they are in absolutely tip top condition.

This mid nineteenth century Chinese export nest of four coffee tables comes in a dark reddish-brown hardwood with a rich colour and well-figured panelled tops. The set displays openwork carved and pierced friezes below the tops, along with bamboo-carved upright supports and raised mouldings framing each panel. The largest table measures 71 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, with the remaining three tables graduating smoothly in size to fit neatly underneath. Practical for everyday use in a modern home, this set works effectively at the end of a sofa or arranged individually around a sitting room as lamp tables or side tables. The durable hardwood construction handles daily tasks easily, while the nested design saves floor space when multiple surfaces are not required. The tables function equally well in a traditional study, a gentleman's library, or a living space.
