Description

A superb set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1930’s period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset tooled leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

The brass topped pole that stands above the steps can be lifted out, so this breaks down into a smaller size for ease of transport.

Library steps were traditionally designed to provide access to high bookshelves in private studies and large residential libraries during the Georgian and Victorian periods.

Authentic pieces are usually crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, frequently featuring inset leather treads with gilt tooling and traditional joinery such as dovetailing or mortise and tenon.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber patina, hand-cut joinery, wear patterns on the treads, and the type of leather or tooling used, which should reflect period-appropriate craftsmanship.

They can be used functionally beside tall bookcases or styled as a unique display stand for plants, books, and decorative objects in a study or living room.

Maintain the finish by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional micro-crystalline wax to the wood, and cleaning the leather with a dry or barely damp cloth.
