FAQs

A Georgian butlers table is a portable, folding occasional table designed during the eighteenth century to assist household staff during food and beverage service. They typically feature an X-frame folding mechanism and a rectangular top.

Georgian folding tables were primarily crafted from solid dense mahogany, favoured for its strength and rich grain. Construction often incorporated brass hinges, iron pins, and hand-cut joinery to allow smooth folding.

Authentic Georgian examples exhibit hand-cut dovetails, iron or brass folding hardware showing natural patination, and hand-planed underside surfaces. The timber typically demonstrates a deep, oxidized patina consistent with age.

These adaptable pieces function effectively as drinks tables beside a sofa, occasional side tables in narrow hallways, or temporary bedside surfaces, blending historic character into modern rooms.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
