Description

A superb example of an early 19thc sycamore / banded pine cheese vat, these collectable items are also known as chessels or chessets...this fine piece is also initialled MY and dated 1811.....I have never seen one carved ,...it is skill fully carved with a large fish, closely resembling a Dolphin / Hippocampus....it would have been used in the country kitchen of a large manor house and it was used by placing the salted curd into the chessel and then the whey drained away through drainage holes in the base and the cheese formed leaving this fine pattern on the surface.... it is in excellent condition with a fine natural colour and patination.

A cheese chessle is a traditional wooden mould or form used historically in domestic dairying to shape and press curds during cheese making.

Dairy treen and chessles were typically crafted from close-grained, durable hardwood timbers such as sycamore, maple, and pine to resist moisture and prevent food contamination.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural patination from historical use, traditional joinery or turning methods, and often period inscriptions or dates.

Antique wooden kitchenalia can be displayed mounted on walls as folk art, arranged on open wooden shelving, or used as tabletop display objects to add textural warmth.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct heat sources, and occasionally treating the dry wood with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax.
