Early Qianlong Chinese Export Famille Rose Teapot, C. 1740–1760
£2,000 $2,701 €2,294
A refined and beautifully preserved Chinese export porcelain teapot from the early Qianlong period, mid-18th century (c. 1740–1760). The ovoid, softly lobed body is painted with circular medallions framed in fine iron-red enamel, each enclosing a delicately rendered famille rose floral bouquet in shades of pink, green and aubergine. Around the shoulder runs an attractive pink trellis (diaper) border, interspersed with scattered floral sprigs that add lightness to the composition. The domed cover continues the same decoration and is topped by a rounded knop with traces of original gilding still visible.
The form is elegant and well-balanced, featuring a straight spout, loop handle with a subtle ruyi-style spur, and clean, pale interior. The bright, luminous glaze and crisp enamelling show the exceptional quality of porcelain produced in Jingdezhen for the export market in the early Qianlong reign. Pieces of this calibre were once the height of luxury in Europe—admired by connoisseurs... and imitated by pioneering factories such as Worcester and New Hall.
Almost three centuries later, this teapot remains a charming and well-preserved example of the golden age of Chinese export porcelain designed for Europe’s fashionable tea tables.
