This handsome late Victorian walking cane which has a finely carved Black Forest wooden handle in the form of an Alsatian (German Shepherd) dog. The dog''s head handle has an articulated mouth which is red inside with carved teeth, glass eyes and has a beautiful patination.
The mouth is sprung and opens with the trigger action. These novelty canes were popular in Victorian times and would be used to pass calling cards and to entertain guests.
This high quality antique stick has a malacca shaft with pronounced ridge, is a good length at 92 cm long, has a brass ferrule and is in excellent usable condition.
Would make a wonderful piece for a walking stick collector.
