Leathermaché Architectural Decorations, Putti and others

These very rare pieces are made in Leathermaché, 2 of them are characters in the forms of Putti or cherubs and the other are of a high born couple, their costume seems to date from the 15th-16th Centuries

Lethermaché was commonly used in the past as a form of decoration similar to carved wood or stonework and frequently used under plaster work it is not as durable as wood or stone so not very much of it still survives.

These pieces have been attached to a 19th Century Oak Panel and can be wall hung for display, they have been preserved quite well but they are not perfect and have suffered a few losses

The putti are 23” high and 5” wide, the whole panel is 38” tall, 27” wide and 5” in depth

Leathermache is a composite decorative material composed of shredded or boiled leather scraps mixed with resins and glues, pressed into moulds to create intricate architectural ornaments. During the nineteenth century, it served as a durable and lightweight alternative to carved timber or heavy cast plaster for interior embellishments.

Craftsmen prepared a pliable paste from leather fibre offcuts and binding agents, which was forced under hydraulic pressure into metal or hardwood moulds. Once hardened, the resulting relief figures were dried, sealed, and often mounted onto timber backings or glued directly to architectural panelling.

Authentic period pieces exhibit faint surface grain reminiscent of compressed leather, crisp moulded detail, and uniform dark patination from age. Unlike timber carvings, the reverse side or damaged edges will reveal fibrous leather density rather than wood grain or white plaster cast.
