This Regency side table dates from the nineteenth century and is constructed from mahogany in a warm brown colour with a polished timber finish and visible patina. The top has drop-flap leaves on either side and a rectangular main section, while a single drawer is pulled open to the right side, showing a dovetailed construction and round brass handles. Beneath the top, a turned central pedestal leads down to four splayed legs fitted with round ball feet at the base. Visible details include the fine grain of the wood and the joinery of the drawer. The piece measures 69 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, making it a compact standalone surface for everyday use in a home. It functions practically as an occasional table next to the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a living room, study, or hallway to hold small personal items, books, or a reading lamp while offering modest storage within the single drawer.

FAQs

A drop flap or drop leaf side table features hinged extension panels attached to a central fixed tabletop that lower to save space or raise to expand the working area. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these compact tables served as adaptable occasional furniture in domestic interiors.

These tables were primarily built using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, selected for stability and rich colour. Internal drawer framing typically incorporated pine or oak with hand-cut dovetail joints and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-tooled construction marks, including hand-cut drawer dovetails and irregular underside planing. Additional indicators include natural timber shrinkage, aged patination on the mahogany surface, and period-appropriate cast brass fittings.

Place the table alongside an armchair or sofa to function as an occasional surface, opening the flaps when additional space is required. It can also be situated in a hallway or alcove decorated with a table lamp and ceramic objects.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth along the grain line, avoiding spray cleaners containing silicone or harsh chemicals. Apply a coat of natural beeswax once or twice per year to nourish the timber and preserve the historic finish.
