Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the refectory, typically characterised by long, narrow proportions and sturdy trestle bases designed to seat many people.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy hardwoods, predominantly English or European oak, utilizing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged constructions, and substantial stretcher bases for structural stability.

Authenticity is identified through hand-planed surfaces, traditional tool marks, period-appropriate joinery methods, natural timber shrinkage, and consistent patination accumulated through decades of use.

An antique refectory table works effectively as a focal point in contemporary spaces when paired with contrasting minimalist seating, modern lighting fixtures, or clean architectural backdrops to balance historical weight.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, cleaning with a soft damp cloth, and periodically nourishing the wood with traditional beeswax.
