Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the dining hall, known as the refectory.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwood timbers such as oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints and stretcher bases for stability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, patination accumulated over centuries, and traditional joinery without modern metal fasteners.

Positioning a wooden table against a neutral wall provides functional surface space while introducing organic texture and historical contrast to contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood and protect the finish from drying out.
