FAQs

Cribbage was invented in the early 17th century by Sir John Suckling, who adapted an older card game called noddy. Boards with pegs were subsequently developed to keep track of scores more efficiently than pen and paper.

Antique cribbage boards were typically fashioned from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, frequently accented with inlaid bone, ivory, mother-of-pearl, or contrasting lighter woods.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-drilled peg holes, natural material inlays like bone or mother-of-pearl, traditional joinery, and patina consistent with age and regular handling.

Such items work well displayed flat on a coffee table, console, or within a glass-fronted cabinet, adding a layer of tactile history and intellectual charm to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperature fluctuations. Applying a microcrystalline wax periodically helps nourish the wood without damaging original finishes.
