Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Georgian era, sundials served both practical timekeeping functions and decorative roles in estate gardens. They were constructed using precise astronomical calculations adapted to the specific latitude of their intended location.

Antique sundials were predominantly cast from bronze, brass, slate, or stone. Heavy metals like bronze were favoured for outdoor use due to their durability and resistance to weather-induced erosion.

Authentic period sundials typically display hand-engraved numerals and markings rather than modern machine stamping. They often feature regional makers signatures, latitude details, natural surface patination, and evidence of historical hand-casting methods.

An antique bronze sundial can be displayed indoors as a curiosity or scientific object on a library desk, deep window sill, or mantlepiece. Mounts or acrylic stands allow the circular plate and gnomon to be presented at an angle for optimal viewing.

Patinated bronze objects require minimal intervention to preserve their historic surface finish. Routine dusting with a soft brush and an optional light coating of microcrystalline wax will protect the metal from moisture without stripping natural oxidation.
