This 18th century English side table originates from the English Country style and presents a warm brown timber finish. The piece takes the form of a lamp table constructed from oak with brass hardware, comprising a single rectangular drawer fitted with two brass swan-neck drop handles. Turned legs support the upper surface, joined near the base by a shaped lower stretcher with arched details, and the legs terminate in simple bun feet. The solid wooden top displays plank construction with visible joins across the surface. Measuring 69 cm high, 80 cm wide and 52 cm deep, the table sits comfortably at the end of a sofa in a living room or study to hold a lamp, books or everyday items while adding traditional character to the interior.

An antique English oak lamp table is a compact piece of occasional furniture designed to support lamps, books, or everyday household items. Originating in traditional English joinery, these tables typically incorporate solid oak construction, single drawers for small storage, and sturdy leg supports.

Traditional oak side tables are constructed using solid English oak, often joined with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs. Hand-planed tops, hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, and turned or square-section legs connected by lower stretchers are standard construction details.

Authentic period oak tables show signs of historical hand-tooling, such as hand-sawn marks, uneven board thicknesses, and pegged joinery. Natural contraction across the wood grain, historical wear on lower stretchers and feet, and aged brass hardware or iron fixings further indicate authentic age.

Place an antique oak side table alongside contemporary upholstered seating to create visual contrast between natural wood grain and modern fabrics. Top the table with an understated ceramic lamp or clean-lined decorative pieces to balance traditional joinery with modern design.

Maintain solid oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting of the timber.
