Description

For sale, a fine example of a Dr Wall period Worcester porcelain Teapot decorated with enamel flowers and a flower head knop, dating circa 1765. The teapot is in excellent original and unrestored condition that is free from damage, chips, or hairlines. Slight loss to enamel on the inner petals in a couple of places to the flower head knop. Decorated to the body in bright enamels with various floral spays and flower heads. The lid decorated with moulded leaf and flower head knop. The base with some pre-glaze and firing inner foot rim chips, all perfectly normal as part of the teapots manufacture. Old collectors label to base.

The Worcester factory was founded Dr John Wall Worcester in 1751. He remained the main driver of the company until around 1775. He died in 1776. Size approx. 15cm tall and approx. 17cm handle to tip of spout. Price £495.00 inclusive of shipping to within the UK

Produced between 1751 and 1783 during the leadership of Dr John Wall, this early period of Worcester porcelain is characterised by soft-paste soapstone bodies and hand-painted floral or Asian-inspired enamel decoration.

Early English teapots were predominantly crafted from soft-paste porcelain incorporating steatite soapstone to withstand boiling water, finished with clear lead glazes, polychrome enamel pigments, and gilded accents.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit a greenish-yellow translucency when held to light, glaze shrinkage or pooling around the foot rim, and period-appropriate marks such as the fretted square or crescent mark.
