During the eighteenth century, Worcester was a primary producer of English soft-paste porcelain, heavily influenced by imported Chinese porcelain designs. Handleless tea bowls were standard vessels for tea consumption prior to the widespread adoption of modern cups with handles.

Early Worcester porcelain utilised a soft-paste body incorporating soaprock (steatite) from Cornwall, which improved thermal resistance. Decorations were typically applied using underglaze cobalt blue, painted by hand or transfer-printed, and sealed beneath a lead glaze.
