Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the dining hall, known as a refectory. Over centuries, the design evolved from long, narrow trestle constructions into sturdy four-legged formats suitable for domestic farmhouse use.

Authentic refectory tables are predominantly constructed from heavy domestic hardwoods like English or European oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. The table tops typically feature thick planks sawn from single timber trees.

Authenticity is identified through hand-planed surfaces, irregular plank widths, peg joinery, and natural patination such as dents, scratches, and wax build-up accumulated over centuries of use. Modern reproductions often lack the characteristic hand-cut tool marks and timber shrinkage cracks found in period pieces.

Pairing a rustic wooden table with contemporary minimalist dining chairs creates a striking balance of old and new textures. Layering the surface with simple ceramics or linen runners softens the heavy timber presence while maintaining functionality.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally treating the surface with natural beeswax to nourish the wood grain. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber splitting and warping.
