A Large Antique Treen English Ash Wood Platter - Ideal for Fruit Etc

18th century
For Sale by Opus Antiques
Description

This is a lovely early 1800s English platter made from ash wood. It measures 30cm w and would make a great fruit bowl/platter. It has a rimmed edge.

Note due to its age and a sign of authenticity it is uneven in shape, slightly oval  where the wood has shrunk unevenly. I like to see this on bowls and platters.

For postage costs outside of the UK please contact us.

Declaration

Opus Antiques has dated this Antique Ash Wood Platter to the Georgian era.

This Georgian English Country serving platter takes the form of a shallow circular dish made from ash wood with a warm brown hue and prominent natural grain figure. The piece features a turned rim, a flat base, and an uneven shape that is slightly oval due to uneven wood shrinkage over time. It measures 30 cm wide. Placed on a kitchen island, the platter suits everyday modern use as a decorative fruit bowl or a rustic serving dish for gatherings. Its authentic country character blends easily with traditional and farmhouse interior styles while providing a practical surface for everyday display.

Treen refers to small domestic functional items turned or carved from solid wood prior to the widespread production of cheap ceramics, glass, and metals. Traditional wooden platters feature turned rims, shallow basins, and distinct wood grain patterns characteristic of local hardwoods.

British treen was typically turned from native hardwoods including ash, sycamore, beech, oak, and elm. Ash was particularly favoured for table items due to its resilience, pale tone, and prominent grain pattern.

Authentic treen shows signs of natural age and usage, including subtle shrinkage across the wood grain, smooth patination from handling, lathe marks from historic turning methods, and minor variations in colour.

An antique treen platter can serve as a functional fruit dish on a kitchen island, a base for decorative objects on a dining table, or a visual layer on an open dresser shelf to introduce natural warmth and texture.

Preserve treen by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from central heating radiators to prevent drying and warping. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth and periodically nourish the wood with a clear, natural beeswax paste polish.
