19th Century English Regency Mahogany Serving Table

19th century
Description

This lovely table, made in the later regency period, has superb quality mahogany veneers throughout. The large rectangular top is supported on an inverted breakfront frieze, the central section being a cleverly concealed long drawer. The table stands on four reeded legs with lotus flower-type capitals and turned modified toupie and bun feet. Additional decoration in the form of mouldings is used on the projecting sections above each leg on the frieze.

The proportions and the unusual design suggest a bespoke commission and perhaps a piece of furniture that was architect designed. The reeded legs are something of a trademark of the firm of Gillows during this period and it may be that they were responsible for this very good piece of furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced predominantly between 1800 and 1830, English Regency serving tables are defined by classical Greco-Roman proportions, rich mahogany timber, and architectural features such as fluted legs, reeded aprons, and carved leaf capitals.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid mahogany and fine flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcasses. Turnings, carved details, and hand-cut joinery were standard cabinetmaking practices of the era.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces on undersides, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, genuine patination, hand-turned fluted legs, and classic Regency proportioning without modern machine marks.

Position the table in an entrance hall, formal dining room, or wide corridor. Juxtaposing the dark mahogany wood with modern artwork, contemporary table lamps, or structured ceramic vessels creates a balanced, curated interior.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial aerosol sprays. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing in the direction of the wood grain, and protect the surface from direct sunlight and heat sources.
