This Scottish console table from 1860 follows a rustic country style with a painted pine base and a natural scrubbed pine top. The piece stands at 76 cm high, 170 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The base is finished in a muted green paint and incorporates two drawers fitted with dark turned wooden knobs. The front exhibits a linear moulding detail around each drawer opening, while the structure rests on square tapered legs. Today, this item functions practically beside a front door to hold keys and everyday items, or in a hallway or living space as a decorative surface. The surfaces display visible wear, fading, and historical marks appropriate for its age, adding character to the wood grain and painted finish.

Scottish painted console tables are utilitarian yet decorative accent tables produced primarily during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for hallways, entryways, or sculleries. These pieces typically feature a painted timber base, often in muted tones of green or blue, paired with an unpainted or scrubbed pine top.

These tables are predominantly constructed from native softwoods such as pine or deal using hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery. The lower frame is finished with milk paint or early oil paints, while drawer boxes feature hand-cut dovetails and turned wooden drawer knobs.

Authentic examples demonstrate natural surface wear, particularly around handles, leg corners, and drawer edges, along with shrinkage marks inherent to aged timber. Multiple historical layers of paint or visible wood grain beneath a distressed finish indicate genuine age rather than artificially aged reproduction.

Position the table in an entryway, corridor, or behind a sofa to create a functional focal point. Balance the distressed painted finish with modern table lamps, contemporary ceramic vessels, or a simple framed mirror mounted above the table.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and avoid aggressive liquid cleaners that may strip historic paint finishes. Apply a natural clear wax polish to unpainted pine tops once or twice annually to shield against moisture and maintain the timber.
