Blanc De Chine Guanyin with Fish Basket, Dehua, Early 20th Century

1900 - 1920
Description

Dehua blanc de Chine figure of Guanyin, early 20th century. Standing on a wave base with a dragon head at the front. Ruyi (lingzhi) sceptre in the right hand — the mushroom head is a symbol of immortality; open basket with a fish at the side; bead garlands to the robe. The “Fish-basket Guanyin” type is known from museum examples and major sales. Guanyin (Quan Yin) is the Bodhisattva of Compassion, revered as the “Goddess of Mercy.” The type is represented in major museums and at leading sales (British Museum; Bonhams/Christie’s), and this early 20th-century Dehua figure is a good core piece for a blanc-de-Chine or Buddhist art collection.

Condition: small chip to a basket leaf; subtle factory seam at neck from moulding, not a crack or restoration.

Dimensions: H 27.5 cm; W 9 cm; D 7 cm; 580 g.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Blanc de Chine is a French term used to describe fine white Chinese porcelain produced in the kilns of Dehua in Fujian province, known for its warm, ivory-like tone and rich glaze.

Dehua porcelain is constructed using local kaolin clay rich in potassium oxide, which produces a dense, translucent body coated in a clear or off-white glaze that fuses seamlessly during high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a smooth, warm glaze, fine hand-moulded details such as delicate fingers and beads, and an unglazed base showing a refined, dense paste with minor kiln imperfections.

Position the figure as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or styled shelf to create visual contrast against deeper wall shades or minimalist backdrops.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive clothes that might damage intricate carved details or surface glazes.
