19th century
For Sale by M Lees and Sons
Description

Mid C19th French carved gilt-wood console table of serpentine outline , in the C18th Louis XVI period style.

Raised on shapely carved cabriole-type supports with a geometric carved and pierced frieze centred by a carved leaf motif above, the bottom edge with beaded or ‘split-pearl’ carved decoration . The base joined by a guilloche pattern carved inverted stretcher having a central carved classical urn with snake handles , flanked by carved floral details. The whole on shaped peg feet .

The top of strikingly-figured rare ‘breche violette’ marble having a corresponding serpentine outline together with a moulded edge . This exceptional high quality marble top being 40 mm thick and perhaps originally from an earlier C18th table . The gilded table frame having been constructed in oak .

In excellent original condition with no breaks or repairs .The gilded surface having achieved a pleasing mellow colour and patina .

A highly decorative console table of practical scale and proportions. This elegant yet robust table is designed to be fixed in position to a wall in order to provide stability, especially when considering the need to support the heavy thick marble slab top and has fixing plates to each corner of verso.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style console tables are defined by classical symmetry, geometric proportions, and architectural motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. Typical features include pierced friezes, carved foliage, scroll legs, and marble tops, often crafted in giltwood during 19th-century revivals.

These pieces were typically carved from solid timber like beech or pine, coated in layers of gesso plaster, and finished with gold leaf using traditional water gilding techniques. Tops were commonly fitted with thick, contoured slabs of native or imported marble.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the gilding showing exposed red or yellow clay bole beneath, and patinated unpolished undersides on the marble top. Hand-carved pier tables also show slight variations in symmetry compared to modern machine-made reproductions.

Position the console against a neutral wall to let the gilded finish stand out, and pair it with a modern minimalist mirror or large-scale contemporary painting above to contrast classical and modern design elements.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry painters brush; water and chemical solvents must never be applied as they dissolve traditional gilding bole. Clean marble tops using a damp microfibre cloth with pH-neutral soap, wiping dry immediately to prevent staining.
