FAQs

Antique gilt wood frames gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods, where elaborate carving and gold leaf application were used to display fine art and mirrors in high-status interiors.

These frames are typically constructed from softwoods or hardwoods, coated with gesso, and meticulously hand-gilded with gold leaf over a red bole base layer.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details rather than cast plaster, natural ageing of the gesso and gold leaf, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points when contrasted against minimalist walls or used to frame contemporary artwork, creating a deliberate tension between old and new.

Gilt frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush and must be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and moisture to prevent the delicate leaf and gesso from flaking.
