This set of five 19th-century Georgian Tonquin China ironstone dessert shapes comprises one circular plate, one square plate, and three rectangular plates. Each earthenware dish is finished with a white glaze and decorated with an Imari floral pattern in cobalt blue and rust red, complemented by gilded highlights along the scalloped rims and moulded handles. The circular plate measures 21x22x4 cm, the square plate measures 24x19x4 cm, and the rectangular plates each measure 30x18x4 cm. These serving dishes work well in a traditional dining room or living space, arranged on a sideboard top for display or brought out to serve after-dinner treats to guests.

Ironstone china was developed in Staffordshire, England, during the early nineteenth century as a durable alternative to imported porcelain. The Tonquin pattern features Imari-inspired floral motifs and botanical imagery that reflected the contemporary British fascination with Asian decorative arts during the Georgian and William IV eras.

Ironstone is a dense, vitrified earthenware made from clay mixed with slag, feldspar, and flint. The decorative designs were typically applied using transfer printing techniques, followed by hand-painted polychrome enamel highlights and gilded borders before final glazing.

Authentic pieces generally display significant visual weight and density compared to standard soft-paste earthenware. Examination of the base often reveals impressed or printed maker marks, pattern titles, and fine surface crazing beneath the glaze, alongside hand-applied enamel texture and gilding wear.

These decorative shapes are frequently displayed on plate stands inside glazed china cabinets or styled on a dining room sideboard top. They also function as wall-mounted decorative accents or table centerpieces for traditional and eclectic interior arrangements.

Hand wash gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges that can damage overglaze enamels and gold leafing. Never submerge in hot water for extended periods or place inside modern dishwashers.
