Description

An antique game of Squails, complete with its original sixteen wooden discs, the  wooden swoggle and the lead jack. The  mahogany box has a sliding lid and is almost certainly from the famous games maker John Jacques.

Great  to be complete. The box measures 21.5cm w x 11.5cm d x 3cm h.

C1890

The old English game of Squails was played on a round table and the objective was to hit discs with the heel of the hand from the edge of the table at a small lead target in the centre called a "jack". If the jack was moved more than six inches it was replaced. Once all sixteen Squails had been played, they scored 16 for the squail nearest to the target down to 1 for the squail furthest away. Often, a squail would be directed with the aim of knocking an opponents squail away, as much as to end up near the target, in the same manner as for bowls.

Date of Manufacture

Opus Antiques has dated this Antique Squails Game to the 19th Century.

Squails is a traditional Victorian tabletop disc-sliding game popular in British households during the nineteenth century, where players flick wooden discs towards a centre target.

Antique squails sets typically feature turned wood components, such as boxwood or mahogany for the box and painted hardwood discs, often finished with coloured paper labels.

Authenticity is generally identified through period-appropriate construction techniques, hand-turned wooden elements, original lithographed box labels, and natural patina consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

An antique game set can be displayed on a coffee table, bookcase shelf, or console table to add historical interest, texture, and a conversation-starting focal point to a room.

Preservation involves keeping wooden components away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners.
