FAQs

A Regency centre table is a circular or octagonal table designed to stand in the middle of a room, foyer, or drawing room. Popularised in the early 19th century, these tables typically feature a central pedestal, splayed legs, and high-quality veneers such as mahogany or rosewood.

Regency tables were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, often utilising flame mahogany veneers for decorative tops. Construction methods included hand-dovetailed joints, brass tilt-top mechanisms, and cast brass hairy paw or lion paw castors.

Authentic Regency pieces exhibit classical proportions, hand-carved details, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside. Look for original brass castors, period-appropriate hardware, and timber patination consistent with two centuries of age.

A circular centre table functions effectively as a focal point in an entry hall, open-plan dining space, or library. Pairing dark mahogany timber with neutral contemporary walls and modern lighting creates balanced visual contrast.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer lifting.
