Staffordshire pottery dog figures were immensely popular in Victorian Britain during the 19th century, produced primarily in the industrial pottery towns of Staffordshire as decorative mantelpiece ornaments for the middle classes.

These figures were typically hand-moulded or slip-cast in earthenware ceramic, then hand-painted with metallic oxides and glazed before undergoing a final kiln firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back, hand-painted facial features with characteristic stroke work, and often lack modern factory stamps.

These ceramic animals can be displayed in pairs on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or sideboards to add historical character, whimsy, and classic British charm to contemporary or traditional rooms.

Maintain these fragile pieces by dusting them gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and keeping them out of direct sunlight to protect the hand-painted enamel details.
