FAQs

Staffordshire figures refer to ceramic sculptures produced in the pottery district of Staffordshire, England, starting from the early 18th century through the Victorian era, initially as folk art and later as mass-market mantelpiece ornaments.

Early pieces were typically crafted from earthenware, pearlware, or pottery, hand-painted with underglaze colours or enamel pigments, and often fired in bottle ovens before the widespread adoption of slip-casting.

Authentic pieces from the early 19th century typically feature crazing in the glaze, hollow undersides with vent holes, hand-painted detailing showing minor wear, and earthy ceramic bodies rather than modern synthetic clays.

These decorative objects work effectively when placed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or side tables to introduce historical texture, traditional character, and a touch of whimsy into contemporary spaces.

Preserve ceramic figures by keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding liquid cleaners or immersion in water to protect the aged glaze.
