Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th Century Georgian butlers tray on a folding stand employs warm brown mahogany with a flame veneer finish, solid brass flush hinges, and thick white canvas webbing. The rectangular panelled tray top has four folding sides fitted with inset brass hardware and cut-out hand holes for carrying, resting upon a folding wooden X-frame stand. Visible details include distinct timber grain patterns across the four-panel surface, brass hinges joining the drop sides, and arched handle cut-outs on the perimeter panels. Practical proportions measure 79 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 67.5 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece serves well as an occasional tray table placed near the end of a sofa or in a living room. The folding construction permits straightforward storage or repositioning when floor space is needed, while the flat surface supports drinks, books, or decorative objects. Traditional English country house styling integrates smoothly with classic or transitional interior schemes, providing both display space and portable utility.

FAQs

A butlers tray table is a portable serving piece consisting of a flat tray with deep sides and handles, resting upon a separate collapsible wooden stand. Popularised during the 18th century, these items allowed estate staff to transport refreshments easily between kitchens and reception rooms.

Historic butlers trays were primarily constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. The folding stands often utilise woven cotton or leather webbing straps to support the tray, combined with solid brass hinges on models featuring folding sides.

Authentic 18th and 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass flush hinges, and signs of hand-planed woodwork. The removable trays frequently feature integrated hand holes and drop-down gallery sides held by heavy-gauge brass rule joints.

In contemporary settings, a butlers tray table functions effectively as a side table beside a sofa, a compact home bar setup in a dining room, or an occasional bedside table. The removable tray top allows for versatile functional arrangement.

Clean timber surfaces using a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to preserve the patina and lustre. Avoid placing hot items or liquids directly onto the wood, and clean canvas webbing using a dry soft brush to prevent fibre degradation.
