Tilt top tables became popular in 18th century Britain as versatile furniture pieces that could be tilted upright and stored against a wall when not in use during tea or dining services.

These tables were typically crafted from dense timbers such as mahogany or oak, featuring a birdcage or catch mechanism beneath the top, supported by a turned central column and three-legged cabriole or tripod base.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery methods, hand-cut dovetails or peg construction, old surface patina, shrinkage cracks in the timber, and hand-turned components characteristic of period craftsmanship.

Position the piece beside a sofa or chair as an accent surface to hold a lamp or decorative object, allowing its historical timber grain to introduce warmth and contrast to contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
