This 18th-century European ceramic devotional plaque depicts the Madonna holding the Christ Child in raised relief within an octagonal frame. The earthenware wall art piece has a white tin glaze accented with blue, ochre, and yellow pigments, showing hairline cracks across the surface, visible wear along the edges, and a wire hanging loop attached to the top rim. The moulded composition includes two hanging lamps flanking the central figures and a winged cherub head positioned at the base. The piece measures 27 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, offering a compact display profile. It suits placement on a narrow wall space in a home study, hallway, or living room, adding traditional character to an interior display.

Devotional plaques were personal religious items made from tin-glazed earthenware or majolica, designed for private devotion within domestic interiors, chapels, or external walls. Popular throughout 18th-century Europe, especially in Italy, France, and Spain, they featured relief carvings of the Virgin Mary, saints, or biblical scenes.

These plaques were typically moulded from earthenware clay to form a raised relief design. Following an initial kiln firing, the piece was coated in an opaque tin-based glaze, hand-painted with oxide pigments such as cobalt blue and iron yellow, and fired a second time.

Authentic 18th-century examples display evidence of hand-moulding, slight irregularities in shape, soft wear around raised edges, and age-related crazing or chipping in the glaze. The reverse usually reveals unglazed terra cotta or buff clay alongside historic wire hanging attachments.

An antique ceramic plaque functions well as part of a curated gallery wall alongside framed line drawings and architectural sketches. It can also be displayed individually in a narrow wall space or set upon an easel on a bookshelf.

Dust tin-glazed ceramics gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using liquid cleaning agents, as moisture can penetrate glazed fractures and degrade the earthenware body over time.
