**Totai shippo, meaning "body cloisonné," is a Japanese ceramic technique where urushi lacquer cloisonne decoration is applied to a ceramic or porcelain base. This difficult technique was developed around 1868 by Sukamoto Kaisuke. Totai shippo or “Tree-bark” cloisonne is relatively fragile due to the delicate multi-layering and surfacing technique.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Totai Shippo is a specialized late nineteenth-century Japanese technique where cloisonne enamel is applied onto a ceramic or porcelain base rather than a traditional metal body, frequently featuring a textured ground resembling tree bark.

These chargers consist of a fired porcelain or ceramic core overlaid with thin metal cloisons, vitreous enamel pastes, and a textured enamel surface coat to form the background pattern.

Authentic pieces feature a visible ceramic body beneath un-enamelled areas or on the reverse, hand-applied wirework with vitreous enamel decoration, and often include a textured matte ground accompanied by painterly motifs.

Display the charger on a plate stand atop a sideboard or console table, or mount it securely to a feature wall within a curated gallery display.

Dust the surface lightly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, keeping the item free from liquid solvents, immersion in water, or abrasive materials that could erode the enamel.
