Boulle work is a decorative marquetry technique developed by Andre-Charles Boulle, involving cut patterns of metal, usually brass, inlaid into ebonised wood or tortoiseshell. In nineteenth-century desk accessories, this technique was frequently employed to create intricate foliate patterns on inkstands, writing boxes, and stationary cabinets.

Traditional Victorian and Napoleon III inkstands of this style were constructed from ebonised timber bases, brass inlay, cast metal handles, and fitted lead glass or cut glass pots for holding ink.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-engraved detailing on the brass surfaces, natural surface oxidisation, and micro-imperfections along the cut inlay borders where metal meets the ebonised wood base.
