Swansea Porcelain Comport "Mandarin" Chinoiserie Pattern, C 1815-1817

19th century
Description

A wonderful and rare Swansea porcelain comport/basket dating to 1815-1817.

The comport is potted in the finest duck-egg translucent porcelain and beautifully decorated in colourful “Mandarin” Chinoiserie pattern.

The pattern is very interesting - central part is printed and painted with oriental figures, possibly a family on a riverbank before a pavilion, but we also can see European looking buildings at the background. It all is surrounded by a border with panels of birds on a gilt scrollwork ground spaced by red ‘pencilled’ scenes and finished off with lavish gold handles.

The comport marked to the reverse, and the pattern is well-documented, known as pattern 164 and can be found in WD John Swansea Porcelain book, plate 8.

Dimensions: 31.5x20.5 cm and 7 cm high.

Condition: excellent antique condition, without any losses or repairs and hardly any wear to gilt.

A fine example of Georgian Welsh Swansea porcelain for a fine collection.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A comport is a footed dish or shallow tray used historically on formal dining tables for serving fruit, sweetmeats, or dessert items. During the Regency period, these vessels were produced by leading British manufactories and heavily decorated in popular oriental-inspired patterns.

Pieces from this period were typically produced using translucent soft-paste porcelain decorated with overglaze enamel painting and hand-applied mercury gilding along the handles and borders.

Authentic items feature characteristic porcelain translucency, evidence of hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer prints, genuine wear to base rims and gilded edges, and occasional impressed or painted maker marks on the underside.

These historical pieces are frequently displayed as decorative focal points on sideboards, consoles, or inside glazed cabinets. They can also serve as elegant holders for small items or function as standalone decorative objects on a dining table.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, and dishwashers, as these will wear away overglaze enamels and original gilding.
