A "John Manton" Transitional Six Shot English Revolver, London, Circa 1840.

The pistol signed along the top flat of the barrel ''Manton, London''. The Mantons were one of the most influential and esteemed gunmakers in London in the late 18th & 19th century.
 
Chequered walnut grip and a octagonal 14cm sighted barrel.
 
Engraved around the muzzle and around the cylinder.
 
Foliate engraved butt. The bar-hammer engraved with scrollwork along the top & sides. Trigger-guard en suite.
 
Proof marks to the underside of the barrel, also each chamber engraved with a proof mark. Percussion cap firing mechanism.
 
The pistol in good working order & in excellent condition.

Provenance : from the estate of a collector, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.
 
Joseph Manton was a highly influential London gunmaker in the late 18th to early 19th century. After his death in 1835, his son John Augustus Manton (1809–1852) continued the business under the name Joseph Manton & Son, operating at No. 6 Dover Street, London.
